Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park (SHP) in Coloma, California is the site of the gold discovery that initiated the California Gold Rush. Prior to the gold rush, the Coloma Valley was home to Native Americans who lived off the richness of the land. In the early days of the gold rush, Coloma was the hub of mining activity for the surrounding area. Today Marshall Gold Discovery SHP hosts schoolchildren from all over the state and visitors from all over the world who come to learn more about the rush for riches that helped propel California into statehood in 1850.
