At a Generation Hope Group Event

Do you love playing with children? Is reading Dr. Seuss and making Play-Doh castles your idea of a great time? If so, join Generation Hope’s HOPE CORPS Program!

Generation Hope is currently looking for fun-loving, passionate volunteers to join our Hope Corps Program. Hope Corps Members will play a crucial role in helping Generation Hope achieve our mission. By providing high-quality childcare at every Scholar training, Hope Corps Members make it possible for our Scholars to concentrate on learning important knowledge and skills that will make them successful in college, instead of worrying about securing a babysitter. It’s volunteers like Hope Corps Members who make it possible for us to train our Scholars in college- and career-readiness, so that they can have success in college and beyond. Participating in the Hope Corps is a terrific opportunity for those who want to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our Scholars and their children.

So that our Members can build meaningful and lasting relationships with our Scholars’ children, Hope Corps Members are expected to make a year-long commitment to provide childcare for at least three (3) events of our several events. Hope Corps Members can sign up in advance for the events that they’d like to attend. Depending on how many events Hope Corps Members participate in, this will a 2-6 hour commitment every quarter. All events are metro-accessible. Hope Corps Members must also submit a background check and attend a 2-hour orientation before joining the Hope Corps.

What are the benefits of joining the Hope Corps?

There are lots of advantages to joining the Hope Corps! In addition to helping to make a difference in the lives of our Scholars, this is also a great opportunity to build relationships with our Scholars' children. Through our childcare program, Hope Corps Members will get to know and cultivate meaningful, sustained relationships with our Scholars' children. This is also a great professional development opportunity. Hope Corps Members will receive periodic training throughout the year to help them hone their skills in topics like behavior management and restorative justice. Plus, you’ll get to network with other awesome Hope Corps Members! Last but not least, it'll be a lot of fun! Joining the Hope Corps means spending a Saturday morning reading Dr. Seuss, singing "Old McDonald," and playing "Duck, Duck, Goose!" It'll be a blast for everyone involved.

About Generation Hope:

Founded in 2010, Generation Hope selects teen parents who have displayed academic achievement and a desire to go to college to become Scholars in the Generation Hope Scholar Program. Teen parents are often dismissed by school officials and others when it comes to their potential to pursue higher education. Generation Hope presents college-readiness workshops in the community throughout the year to identify and recruit promising students to our program. Once accepted, Generation Hope provides each Scholar with support that we believe increase the likelihood that they will obtain their college degree; up to $2,400 per year in tuition assistance, one-on-one mentoring, and case management. Additionally, Scholars receive an increased network of support from the extended family that the program provides to them and to their young children. This support stays with Scholars until they earn their two or four-year degree.

About Generation Hope

Location:

1401 Okie Street NE, Suite 300, WASHINGTON, DC 20002, US

Mission Statement

Generation Hope is a nonprofit organization that matches sponsors with teen parents who are attending college and are in need of financial and emotional support. Based on the belief that education is vital to success, its purposes are to give young parents and their children a support system as they pursue academic excellence, to provide a direct-support experience for sponsoring organizations and individuals, and to create a new generation of ambitious and successful families.

Description

This one-of-a-kind program, started by a former teen mother who wanted to see more teen parents beat the odds, matches teen parents (Scholars) who are attending college in the Washington, D.C. metro area with individuals, organizations, and local businesses (Sponsors) to participate in a mentoring relationship that includes emotional and financial support. This is a multi-year commitment, lasting until the Scholar receives their college degree.

We believe education is the best promise for teen parents to achieve stable and successful futures and consistent financial and emotional support increases the likelihood that they will graduate. When teen mothers and fathers earn college degrees, their children are less likely to live in poverty, and our communities are strengthened.
