SUMMARY
Under the direction of museum staff, Docents share information with the public through guided tours and
public programming. Additionally, they assist in opening and closing the museum, cleaning exhibits, and
carrying out additional assigned tasks as needed. Docents are also required to assist the public by sharing
accurate historical information, greeting visitors, answering visitor questions, and keeping the museum and
its artifacts safe from damage.

TIME COMMITMENT
Docents are expected to volunteer a minimum of 6 hours each month. Docents should have availability to
work on Wednesdays, Fridays or Saturdays during the day to cover museum open hours which includes
leading tours. Museum open hour shifts are normally from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm and from 1:15 to 4:15 pm on
Saturdays; tour shifts are variable but require a minimum of 3 hours per shift. Docents are asked to make a
minimum six month commitment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
● Lead tours of the museum and assist in public programming. This includes playing games and
independently managing groups of visitors.
● Greet visitors and answer questions.
● Help keep visitors, artifacts, and the buildings safe.
● Light cleaning including vacuuming and dusting the historic rooms.
● Assist in opening and closing the museum by sweeping sidewalks, putting out and retrieving signs,
and covering and uncovering furniture with dust cloths.

REQUIREMENTS
● Must be over age 16.
● An interest in learning about the history of Broomfield and the train depot.
● Good customer service skills and excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
● Enjoy working with adults and children.
● Ability to receive and send email, the primary form of communication between staff and volunteers.
● Ability to follow verbal directions and to read and follow written procedural manuals.
● Ability to work as part of a team and independently.
● Agree to follow the policies and procedures of the City and County of Broomfield and the Broomfield
Depot Museum.
● Willingness to learn museum best practices and how to read audiences and adjust tours to specific
guests (ages, interests, and reasons for visiting).
● Must pass a background check.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Docents regularly climb stairs, bend down and may have to occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
