Are you a compassionate person looking to provide loving kindness, comfort and support?

Patient Companion Volunteers visit with home care patients who may be lonely and help family members who may be emotionally overwhelmed. These volunteers help provide socialization to patients by reminiscing, reading, listening to music and assisting with other meaningful activities. Patient Companion Volunteers also provide caregivers with a break from their daily routine of caring for their terminally ill loved one. This allows the caregiver time to shop or run errands while the volunteer spends time "sitting" with the patient. Volunteers find this work to be truly meaningful. Companionship visits are generally 1-2 hours weekly; respite visits are usually 3-4 hours weekly. Some patient needs are every other week only.

Our Volunteer Coordinator offers frequent new volunteer training sessions at our Spartanburg office and works with the volunteer as they become more comfortable in their role. The volunteer training program, TB Testing and a health screen must be completed before service can begin. These are offered at no charge to new volunteers. Volunteer training covers the goals and philosophy of hospice care, how to comfort and support patients and their families, and how to handle emergency situations.

Hospice volunteers have a tremendous impact on the lives of the patients that they serve, the hospice team of which they are a part, and the families and friends of the terminally ill. Thanks for your interest in volunteering with Hospice Care of South Carolina/Agape Hospice!

Please note, some of Hospice Care of South Carolina/Agape Hospice's volunteer services are temporarily suspended to help reduce the risk of coronavirus transmission. We are still accepting VolunteerMatch applicants. We are also determining when and how to resume volunteer services while protecting the well-being and safety of our volunteers, employees, patients/families and the community. Please continue to submit your information and our Volunteer Coordinator will keep you updated on the status of the program.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to be the leader in end-of-life care always, serving our communities with compassionate care.

Description

The philosophy of hospice is to improve the quality of life for patients with a life-limiting illness. Hospice is an option when patients and their physicians determine that future efforts to cure the illness are no longer feasible or desirable. The focus of treatment moves from curing to caring. Hospice care is provided by a specialized team addressing the medical, spiritual and emotional needs of the patient and, equally important, the family. The focus of hospice is to assure the patient is comfortable, allowing them to participate in special moments and enjoy the days ahead. Hospice is not designed to hasten death or "help" someone die, but rather to help patients live the remainder of their lives as fully as possible, on their own terms.

As a member of our hospice volunteer family, you will embark on an unforgettable journey of compassion, fulfillment, and friendship. Every day our hospice volunteers enhance the lives of those facing a life-limiting illness. As a hospice volunteer, your contribution can come in many ways, from lending clerical and office support to spending time with patients or supporting family caregivers. Whatever role you choose to play, however small or large, to the families we serve your contribution will be immeasurable.
