Volunteers for Dakota City's school programs and tours get the chance to work with the public of all ages and teach them the history of Dakota County and a rural 1900 village. Volunteers also work in a fun environment, meet new people and make new friends through the Dakota City events and programs. We are looking for outgoing adults to dress in period costume (provided by us) and guide elementary aged school children or other groups through our village when they come for a school field trip or tour. This is an ongoing opportunity. You will compare and contrast life in 1900 to life today, tell about the buildings and their use in 1900, help the children make a craft, supervise children or others with their lunch and serve them an ice cream cone after lunch. Tour dates and times are set by the school or organization, Mondays through Fridays sometime between 9am and 3pm. Volunteer time is typically 2-1/2 to 3 hours each day, for as may days as you want to sign up for. Spring tours start mid-April and run through June, summer tours and camps are June and July, fall tours start mid-September and run through October. The only requirement for volunteering is a willingness to come to training and learn our program. No experience necessary but it is helpful if you like to "perform" and can speak in front of groups. Orientation, training and costumes are provided before you start.
