ReadyKids is looking for two volunteers who love kids! The volunteers would provide free childcare in our lobby for parents who are attending a " Trauma-Informed Parenting" class. The goal of the group is to provide parenting education and emotional support for parents and caregivers of children or teens who have experienced trauma.
There are usually no more than 8 kids, varying in ages from infants to pre-teens. Dinner is provided for the kids (pizza). A second volunteer would be with you for support (or you could recruit a friend to volunteer with you!). You'd also get to work closely with our trauma counselors and front desk staff if you run into issues.
We're happy to give you a tour of ReadyKids, or meet with you in person before you make a commitment. We can also put you in touch with volunteers who handled the child care during our fall trauma-informed parenting group, so you can ask questions and get unbiased responses.
The volunteer position does require a fair bit of paperwork, including fingerprinting and a background check, because you would be working with vulnerable children. But, it's a very rewarding experience! Perfect for a retiree, or for students interested in counseling or teaching as future professions!
The group will meet on Thursdays from 5 - 6:30 p.m. from January 23 - March 12 at ReadyKids, 1000 East High Street, Charlottesville.
