POPS stands for pain of the prison system and POPS the Club stands for healing that pain for teens in high schools.
POPS creates, oversees and supports clubs that meet weekly throughout the academic year in high schools. POPS was created to support students who have been impacted by the prison, jail and detention systems. Most club members have parents and/or other loved ones (siblings, friends, cousins, uncles, aunts...) who are or have been incarcerated; some students have been incarcerated. POPS students include those with family members who have been detained and/or deported. Needless to say, sorrow, pain and anger afflict students as a result of the loss they have experienced, and oftentimes as a result of the stigma they have faced. But in the safe space that a POPS Club is, resilience, intelligence, warmth, comradeship and kindness reign, and meetings are often joyful and deeply meaningful. Finding a place where these young people count, where people see and hear and welcome them, provides enormous relief, as do the opportunities to express themselves-in conversation, in writing, in artwork, and in performance (all part of the POPS curriculum).
Meeting times are really short and as a volunteer you will help bring the sacred space alive. You are allowed to lead the club or just show up in solidarity.
POPS is looking for volunteers for our Monday meetings from 12:00-12:45pm. This opportunity will be starting at the end of January and continue through the end of the academic year (June of 2020).

Mission Statement
The mission of POPS the Club is to support youth impacted by incarceration and confront the challenges they experience. Through arts-based programs, POPS creates a safe, empowering space for these youth, transforming stigma into hope and dignity so they can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally, now and as adults.
Description
POPS the Club started in 2013 at Venice High School as a method of supporting youth who have loved ones in prison to hope and healing. POPS was established as a 501(c)3 in early 2014, and as of June 2019, clubs have been established in eight high schools in Los Angeles, as well as in Georgia, New York, and Pennsylvania. POPS publishes an annual anthology of POPS students' and graduates' writings and artwork. Our goal is to bring the POPS program to high schools across the country. The impact of the support of peers, a curriculum focused on self-expression, mindfulness, and community engagement has been profoundly healing.
