The Issue
Nearly 75 percent of teen girls are interested in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM),
but their interest fades as they move through middle and high school. Girls aren’t necessarily
exposed to STEM in ways that speak to them and inspire their career ambitions. To be effective
and long-lasting, early and sustained intervention (before third grade), is critical to keeping girls
engaged in STEM.

An Important Solution
Girl Scouts San Diego is prioritizing STEM education to help girls bridge the gender gap in STEM career fields by holding events, community partnerships, and badge-earning activities.

With the help of visionary corporations and foundations, Girl Scouts of the USA is pledging to add
2.5 million girls to the STEM pipeline by 2025. Locally, Girl Scouts San Diego is pledging to provide
10,000 STEM experiences each year for girls of all ages.

Girl Scouts has both the reach and proven programming to motivate a new generation of girls to
explore STEM and become confident leaders.

You can help by becoming a volunteer for STEM Club or Incredible Race!

STEM Club
Co-lead or support a group of STEM-focused Girl Scouts in meaningful quarterly meetings, and help develop Girl Scouts San Diego’s STEM program. Meetings can include fun STEM activities, focus on current events, career exploration, project mentoring, etc.
- Commitment: Quarterly
- Serving: Grades 6-12

Incredible Race
Lend a hand at this amazing scavenger hunt where Girl Scouts in K-8 complete STEM challenges as they explore Balboa Park.
- Office Support: Jan.-March for 2-3 hours at a time based on your availability
- Event day: Saturday, March 21 for 5 hours

We may also have volunteer opportunities for the following (depending on department needs at any given time):

1. Girl Scout Outreach (GSO)
Work alongside Girl Scout staff to bring after-school leadership and STEM learning opportunities to girls in every school district. Great for college students or anyone who can keep up with energetic school groups!
- Commitment: Hours vary, based on the school
- Serving: Grades K-6

2. Gold Award Committee Mentor
The prestigious Gold Award is Girl Scouting’s highest achievement. You can mentor high school girls as they create and execute STEM projects. You’ll be part of a committee that guides girls (and the adults who work with them) through the process of earning the Gold Award.
- Commitment: monthly meetings are one-three hours, depending on agenda; phone calls, emails, and additional meetings with girls may take one to four additional hours per month. Attendance at the annual
Gold Award Ceremony in June is required.
- Serving: Grades 9-12

3. Workshop Leader
Use Girl Scouts’ detailed curriculum and your expertise to provide a unique badge-earning experience for a troop, working directly with the girls.
- Commitment: As needed; based on your availability
- Serving: Grades K-8

4. STEM Badge Trainer: Become a Girl Scout STEM Badge expert! Following Girl Scout’s detailed curriculum, you can help troop leaders feel confident when talking to their girls about STEM badges and doing hands-on learning with them. Girl Scouts can select from 96 STEM badges tailored for their grade level, in fields that range from mechanical engineering to coding. To find a theme you’re passionate about, visit the Badge Explorer page at girlscouts.org!
- Commitment: As needed; based on your availability
- Serving: Adults
