As students progress through History Day competitions at the school, district, state, and national levels, they rely on volunteers like you to evaluate their projects and help them to improve the skills that they have developed throughout the process.
Maryland Humanities invites you to serve as a judge for the 2023 Maryland History Day contest at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County when over 600 students will arrive with History Day projects focused on the theme of "Frontiers in History."
As a judge, you will:
- Register before March 30th
- Complete judge training (online)
- Work with a team of volunteers to review projects and interview students
- Select the strongest projects to advance to the next level of contest
- Provide thorough written feedback about each project you view
First Round Judges
- Papers/Website/Documentary Judges: Before the contest, Judges in these three categories will receive their assigned projects to review, which generally takes 3-4 hours. Judge groups will then schedule a virtual meeting to determine their preliminary rankings, about 1 hour. On the day of the contest, May 6, 2023, judges in these categories will interview students and confirm their rankings and finalize their evaluations. (Approx. 8a.m.-12p.m.)
- Performance/Exhibit Judges: On the day of the contest, May 6, 2023, judges in these two categories will review projects, interview students, rank projects, and complete evaluations. (Approx. 8a.m.-12p.m.)
Final Round (Runoff) Judges
- On the day of the contest (May 6, 2023), Final Round Judges will gather in the afternoon to thoroughly review the highest ranked projects and decide on the top two projects in each category to advance to National History Day. There are no interviews in this round, and judges will work together to complete one evaluation per project.
Paper, Website, Documentary: Approx. 8a.m.-12p.m
Performance, Exhibit: Approx. 12:30p.m.-3p.m.

- Maryland History Day begins at approximately 8:00am and ends between 12pm-2:30. Judges commit approximately 6 hours on the day of the event, possibly more if you decide to be a second round judge.
- You must complete judge training/orientation prior to the date of the contest.
