Who we are looking for:

  • Bethesda North is currently seeking volunteers to complete a pilot educational training program in order to provide inpatients clinical care in assistance during mealtimes (breakfast and lunch).

Why:

  • Worldwide, it is estimated that between 20% and 50% of all adult patients admitted to hospital wards are malnourished.

Goals:

  • To maintain mealtime safety
  • To encourage patient participation in eating
  • To promote family involvement
  • To promote volunteer involvement
  • To encourage the social and pleasurable aspects of meals

Roles of Mealtime Assistant:

  • Must be willing to complete mandatory feeding technique training provided by volunteer staff and Speech Pathology.
  • Keep track of training logs and complete mealtime assistant data sheets
  • Assist patients during breakfast and lunch by feeding, setting up trays, opening containers, cutting food, cleaning area, providing encouragement etc.
  • Meet other patient requests or comfort needs during rounding
  • Must be able to communicate with patient, nursing/clinical staff, and research team to ensure safety and report/record any serious adverse events
  • Preferred a healthcare/medical background, or are currently earning a degree within the field
  • Must be age 18 or older

Support:

This educational program will be supported by the Hatton Research Institute, Volunteer Services, Office of CMO, and Speech Pathology
