Art Information Volunteers
The education division recruits, orients, and supports the volunteers who staff the Information Desks at the entrances to the East and West Buildings. These volunteers are the face of the Gallery for many of our visitors, welcoming them and providing assistance and information. Art information volunteers respond to a range of visitor questions about the permanent collection, special exhibitions, and Gallery programs and facilities. They also keep the desks stocked with maps and brochures for the public; track visitor requests, questions, and comments; and assist with visitor surveys from time to time.

Commitment
Participation in the program requires a two-year commitment of time and service. Weekday volunteers assume responsibility for one four-hour morning or afternoon shift per week, with a minimum requirement of 46 shifts per year. Weekend volunteers accept a similar four-hour obligation on alternate Saturdays or Sundays, with a minimum requirement of 23 shifts per year. A willingness to devote additional time to learning about the Gallery’s collections and attending enrichment programs is expected of each volunteer. Attendance at a specified number of in-service meetings also is required.

Training Requirements
The volunteer orientation program includes an initial course conducted on selected Saturdays in the spring by the art information staff. Prospective volunteers are introduced to the Gallery’s collections, policies, programs, and administrative structure. Training includes lectures, discussions, building and gallery tours, and home assignments. In addition to the formal training sessions, prospective volunteers are asked to follow regularly scheduled tours of the collections, attend several gallery talks and other programs, and work with a mentor. After successfully completing the course and serving a probationary period, candidates assume their responsibilities at the Information Desks.
