ORGANIZATION: The Forest School Foundation

How many of your favorite childhood memories take place outside? We're betting a lot of them, because the natural world is the best place for young children to grow and learn. More and more science shows that young children need plenty of time spent in free play and gently guided nature connection in natural settings for optimal health, and that time spent indoors on screens is directly harmful to children's health. Our nature connection schools seek to provide space for that optimal development, and we need a strong Board to help advocate for them.

We are located in a city populated by many people who would want to support our organization, if only they were given the opportunity. We're looking for volunteer board members with experience and enthusiasm for event planning and coordination, nonprofit fundraising experience a definite plus.

This would entail scouting for venues, entertainment, and catering by donation or reduced rate, planning fundraising events, and providing information to other volunteers for help decorating and running each event.

This volunteer or these volunteers would work along with Board members and volunteers handling online fundraising campaigns, social media, and marketing.

We would like to have at least one annual fundraising gala, with smaller events throughout the year that could be coordinated with other similar organizations.

Any individuals with these skills and interests located in or familiar with the Asheville, NC area are encouraged to contact us.

About The Forest School Foundation

Location:

Mission Statement

Young children deserve as much time outdoors as possible, learning through play in natural environments. A growing body of research is showing that human development is most healthy when young children are allowed to move freely, focusing primarily on social-emotional development and connection with the natural world. Forest schools help provide the opportunity for nature connection that humans biologically require, and our Foundation was established to proliferate this model. The Forest School Foundation (www.TheForestSchoolFoundation.org) is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit located in Asheville, NC, created to provide future generations with safe and natural outdoor environments in which to play, learn, socialize, and develop. The Foundation plans to establish and support Forest Schools across the WNC region, including the provision of scholarships for underserved populations.

Description

Our first school is Growing Wild Forest School, (www.GrowingWildForetSchool.org), started in December 2016. This five-day-a-week, half-day school meets for 10 months of the year in West Asheville. Families can choose which days of the week they'd like to enroll. We're offering six weeks of Summer Camp in 2019.

As we grow, we plan to offer an afternoon program, a weekly Mommy & Me program for families with children younger than 3, an after-school program for children older than 6, monthly adult programs, community education events, and teacher training. We also plan to establish more forest schools in the WNC region.
