James River Hospice needs caring, compassionate volunteers to provide basic companionship for our patients and short-term respite (Caregiver Relief) for their families. Patients reside in healthcare facilities and home settings. Volunteers are requested to go wherever the patient resides to provide support.

Volunteers will: sit with patients while their families and / or caregivers run errands or need a break, engage in conversation, life review, reading, listening or playing music, engaging in television, storytelling, light housekeeping or meal prep, assist patients and their families with basic errands and so much more!

We are asking for a commitment of 1-4 hours weekly based on patient / family needs. Companionship visits last roughly an hour. Visits for caregiver relief can last up to 4 hours to allow for doctor appointments, shopping, resting, etc.

All volunteers will be required to attend an orientation detailing the policies and procedures of hospice care, as well as their specific duties and roles.

*Please note: James River Home Health and Hospice, Inc. is a for-profit hospice agency. Volunteer engagement is a requirement of Medicare Hospice Conditions of Participation 418.78

Mission Statement

To knowledgeably and compassionately meet the needs of our clients and their families by listening, planning, and delivering individualized home care of the highest quality.

Description

Our proprietor, Shane Maley, has been providing medical equipment services for patients for over twenty years, and realized a progression for more complete care coordination and better quality of life by employing skilled services for area patients diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). JRHH was incorporated in July 2013 for this purpose and began to see steady and healthy growth due to our exceptional patient care. For years we have enjoyed a great reputation with our patients and the area medical community through hard work and a drive to help all our clients to the best of our abilities.
