Volunteer with Behind the Book, a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to love reading. Through our rich, innovative programs, which are part of the class curricula, accomplished authors visit high-needs Pre-K-12th-grade classrooms to guide students in creating their own writing projects based on the theme of the author's book.
GoPass, a secure screening system for volunteers working with vulnerable populations, is required. If you'd like to apply, you can volunteer while your application is processed. Behind the Book covers the fee.
No experience is necessary. We provide advance information on your role, and hold a brief orientation right before a workshop begins. As a coach, you'll support and encourage students as they work on their projects.
This research workshop needs your help at a school in the Bronx, NYC. To sign up, contact volunteer@behindthebook.org with program code 2237GN-R. We'll supply more information when you're confirmed.
Date/Time: Wednesday, December 11th / 12:45 - 1:45 PM (please arrive 15-20 minutes early for orientation)
About the workshop: To study the US criminal justice system and how it supports youth offenders. seventh-graders will read Greg Neri's Yummy: The Last Days of a Southside Shorty, a graphic novel that explores gang life. Coaches will support students as they do research to develop argumentative essays about whether the title character, an 11-year-old boy who shot a teen girl, is a killer or a victim.
