MATHCOUNTS (www.mathcounts.org) is a national middle school program that includes a national competition. The San Diego Chapter Competition(cspeef.org/competitions/san-diego/) is the first round for students in the San Diego and Imperial Counties. The top students and schools advance to the state competition.
The school entry fees only cover a portion of the competition costs. Local STEM organizations donate funds and volunteers donate their time to make this annual event happen.
Volunteers receive training on the morning of the competition and no special math knowledge is required, with answer keys provided for the graders. Proctors manage their testing room of 20 students. Pizza lunch and drinks are provided to the volunteers.
