***********************************************************

We are in need of 2 volunteers that will fill multiple needs.

We need volunteers to assist with the distribution of food to our clients. Our hope is to find people that are dedicated to the service of others and possibly want to become permanent members of our team. We are a small group that gathers every Thursday from 11am - 3:30pm to pack boxes, prepare protein bags and distribute food to clients between the hours of 1pm-3pm.
Volunteers are required to:
Work well with other volunteers
Participate in the registration of clients as needed.
Be patient with food pantry clients
Help with the intake of food products from Hunger Task Force every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month- food deliveries may occur between 10:30 and noon.
Assist with gathering of food from Feeding America -when this activity is reinstated.
Assist with keeping the storage and distribution areas clean.
Help with inventory when needed
Monitor gathering of foods
Organize donated clothing, as needed
Volunteers who decide to remain with us are required to attend annual Civics Training classes hosted by Hunger Task Force.
Volunteers are required to follow HTF guidelines. Information regarding the guidelines will be provided at the pantry.

At this time, we are not obtaining food from Feeding America, but hope to do so in the near future.
For Insurance purposes, a driver must have a valid WI driver's license. Drivers must have clean records while driving the church van. A driver may be needed to assist with gathering food from FA, loading and unloading van.

Need volunteers to assist/monitor distribution of food to clients:
Distribution includes making sure that clients receive the amount of food consistent with family size. We currently package foods for distribution between the hours of 11am and 12:45 pm.

Most of our clients live a short distance from the pantry and most walk. For the elderly and handicapped and those without a car, we from time to time load their food into our wagon and help them to their door step. We do not enter their homes.

Monitor clients arriving at the pantry for safe distancing and assure that the traffic flows smoothly. Due to Covid-19 precautions, we allow one client into the building at a time. Our hope is to service clients from the parking lot or maybe utilize our tents when weather is permitting and we have enough volunteers that can set up and take the tents down.

In a crunch, we may need help with client registration. This task involves verifying name, address, identifying number of members in the household, income, food share recipient. Training will be provided to register clients via paper and online.

I indicated that 3 volunteers are needed, you will wear more than one hat. For example, the volunteer who helps load the van may then help on the line with distribution or setup/ cleanup as needed.
Volunteers should arrive at the church by 11am on Thursdays and prepare to work until 3:30pm. The pantry is open to clients from 1:00 until 3:00pm.

All volunteers are required to keep the pantry and adjacent areas clean. We all take a part in keeping the pantry clean and removing garbage from the building.

Mission Statement

Solomon Community UMC is a group of believers who strive to identify and meet the spiritual and basic needs of all people. We love God, follow Jesus, and serve people. Solomon Community Temple United Methodist Church is a long standing church in the Harambee neighborhood located in Milwaukee WI for 49 years.

Description

In addition to offering services on Sundays, we are proud of our community’s outreach programs: Rising Sun Community- a program for disadvantaged youth, and "The Helping Community" food pantry. Together these ministries serve over 120 families (over 1000 individuals) each month. Our building is available to local community groups and organizations such as Tikkun Ha-Ir and their food justice program, Neighborhood Improvement District, and the WI Council of Churches. Activities such as free community dinners, youth led events, hospitality for food pantry clients and women’s support groups, are some of the ways we build the community. Over the years, we’ve gained a reputation for being a loving, and open place where ALL are welcomed.

We're a very small congregation with very limited means, but still we STAND to meet the needs of this community. It seems that we are constantly in a fundraising mode to support the continuance of the ministry of our church and its programs. We are in need of, some building repairs and upgrades and a new van which is essential to the running of the food pantry and our children's program.
