YourWords STL is a 501c3 nonprofit that uses one-on-one tutoring, creative writing workshops, and collaborative writing projects to amplify the voices of St Louis youth. We are committed to bridging racial, economic, and cultural divides by honing the ability of young people to tell their stories while providing opportunities for the community to listen. We seek tutors for the 16 to 20-year-olds in transitional housing at Marygrove Children's Home, a therapeutic residence in Florissant, MO, for young people who have experienced abuse or have nowhere else to turn. Our tutors assist the residents with homework and job and college applications. We ask that our tutors are at least 21-years-old, have compassion for marginalized youth, and are able to commit to 90-minute weekly tutoring sessions for at least one semester. For the fall semester of 2020, all tutoring will take place via Zoom video conferencing. We are seeking tutors from a variety of professional backgrounds, with strengths in math, science, English, finance, history, or political science, and while this position is currently virtual due to COVID-19, we prefer that tutors live in or near St. Louis, MO. Description
YourWords STL provides free creative writing programming and homework tutoring to young people in underserved areas of St. Louis. We partner with local organizations to provide workshops for their populations.
We partnered with Marygrove Children’s Home a therapeutic residence for children who have been abandoned or abused and have nowhere else to turn from 2015-2022. Starting in 2022, our tutoring has moved to Clay Community Resource Center in the Hyde Park neighborhood, offering tutoring twice weekly. The tutor volunteers work with students each week on homework as needed for school.
We provide stand-alone workshops with other partner organizations throughout St. Louis. Each year we bring students from various backgrounds together in collaborative writing projects. The tutoring we provide students, whether in person or virtual, becomes even more urgent and impactful, as disparities in resources grow in the wake of a pandemic.
YourWords STL is seeking volunteer tutors, willing to commit to 60-minute weekly tutoring sessions. We are seeking tutors from a variety of professional backgrounds, with strengths in math, science, English, finance, history, or political science, and we prefer tutors live in or near St. Louis MO. Thank you for taking the time to learn about us, and don't hesitate to contact us with any questions.
