A CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) volunteer is a trained community member who advocates for the best interests of a child or sibling group in the court system. CASA of Linn County educates and empowers diverse community volunteers to ensure each child's needs remain a priority in an over-burdened child welfare system.
CASA volunteers get to know the child while also gathering information from the child's family, teachers, doctors, care-givers and anyone else involved in the child's life. Our volunteers come from every walk of life, and they all share a common desire to improve the lives of children.
In light of the recent COVID-19 developments and its impact on our daily lives, CASA is adapting to continue serving children in foster care in Linn County and speaking for the children's best interests. These vulnerable children are at even higher risk right now with additional family stressors, and we anticipate more children coming into care.
Our next training session for new advocates will take place virtually over Zoom so interested volunteers can participate remotely from the comfort of their own home. Our training takes place over a span of 4-5 weeks where we typically meet twice a week for 3 1/2 hours per meeting. You can even collaborate with a friend, relative, co-worker, or partner and go through training together to become a Co-CASA!
