Free language class or classes included - Ask for details. English as a Second Language is included.

Are you a dynamic and enthusiastic speaker of Cantonese who would like to become a Teaching Fellow or Teaching Associate in order to assist our intercultural and educational linguistic program at The Global Language Network? This will be a fun and informative opportunity to gain hands-on classroom experience while helping to promote knowledge of your language and culture in a diverse setting dedicated to the mission of, "Using language as a tool to help fix our world."

This is an environment of affordable and accessible intercultural learning.

We are asking for a consistent weekly commitment to teach in GLN's Spring Semester (6 weeks depending on your availability between mid-March and May 2020) after completing training with GLN's executive director. This is a great pathway to teaching or building the associated skills in public-speaking, leadership, training and related areas that are desired in many professions.

This voluntary position is renewable each semester (Spring, Summer and Fall) based on performance. GLN offers professional-grade references and ongoing support.

Your classes will be set according to your schedule and by teaching with GLN, you will help to expand GLN's programming in your native language for which a curriculum and syllabus will be provided. GLN offers classes in several convenient and metro-accessible locations with classes designed based on your availability.

Native speaking or fluency is required. Completion of complimentary training is required. Details will be provided upon inquiry.

You will work directly with the teacher but there will be many opportunities to take your own initiative.

You should be:
- Energetic
- Interested in global cultures
- Creative
- Reliable
- Interested in a volunteer-driven environment
- Collaborative

Previous experience in teaching or teaching assistance is not required but a willingness to learn is.

If you are interested please complete these steps:
1. RSVP to attend an upcoming teacher training: https://forms.gle/rKGpGgpPRjMaGy5eA

Not a native speaker? Apply to volunteer or be a teaching assistant! Email volunteer@thegln.org for details.

We hope to hear from you and to see you as part of GLN! This position includes the ability to learn languages with GLN by having registration fees fully refunded at the end of a semester so that classes are free based on volunteering once per week.

Thank you for your interest in GLN's global mission. We hope to hear from you.

Mission Statement

The Global Language Network (GLN) is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization founded by Andrew Brown in 2005 whose mission is to provide opportunities to learn any language at a minimal cost. We recruit and train native speakers who volunteer their time to teach their language and share their culture with the DC community. Our affordable classes in 62 different languages build learners' communicative competence and enable them to communicate with others in meaningful and culturally appropriate ways.

Description

GLN makes language learning easy, enjoyable and effective: we create a comfortable environment where students have direct experiences with the target language and culture. We engage them and build their competence and confidence to communicate with others in meaningful and appropriate ways.

GLN teaches language through culture and culture through language because by studying languages people gain knowledge and understanding of the cultures that use that language, and in fact, cannot truly master the language until having also mastered the cultural contexts in which the language occurs.
