We are seeking a male volunteer to mentor a 17-year-old male refugee youth from Eritrea. This youth arrived into Bethany's program in April of 2019 and he lived in a residential group homes. He moved into a foster home in Grand Haven in January of 2020. His native languages are Tigrinya and Saho. This youth identifies as Muslim. His case manager shared, "This youth has adapted well to our program and participates in all activities. He likes to play soccer, basketball, and is open to any activity. He is gaining English skills as his time progresses in the United States but still struggles to communicate effectively. He states that school is important to him and that he enjoys attending. The youth reports that he had little schooling abroad and is working to catch up to his same aged peers."
This youth fled Eritrea when he was 12 years old. It is unsafe for him to return due to lack of familial relationships, history of physical abuse, as well as continued violence in Eritrea.
