  • 5 people are interested

The Cosumnes River Preserve is a 50,000+ acre Preserve that serves to restore and protect the natural landscape surrounding Cosumnes River. Within this Preserve are public hiking trails and an interactive Visitor Center opened every day of the week to the public.
Thanks to our Volunteer Naturalist, we are able to keep the Visitor Center open to the public on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
We are currently looking for new Volunteer Naturalists to add to our team!
As a Volunteer Naturalist, you will:

  • Staff the Cosumnes River Preserve Visitor Center on weekends, committing to at least one shift (4 hours) a month for one year, answering questions and sharing with visitors about the Preserve
  • Guide hikes and paddling tours
  • Help with special outreach events
  • Take care of the native plant garden
  • Participate in special restoration projects
  • And be provided with opportunities to learn more about the flora and fauna of the Preserve.

To be a Volunteer Naturalist, you must participate in a 5-week training course, meeting on Wednesday evenings from 6-8pm.
Our next Volunteer Training will start on Wednesday, January 8th at 6pm, and will continue on every Wednesday there after through February 5th (Jan. 8, 15, 22, 29, and Feb. 5) with a special guided hike on Saturday, January 25th to give you a hands-on training experience.

Mission Statement

We seek to protect and enhance the habitat within the Cosumnes River Preserve project area, including riparian forest, wetland, vernal pool grassland, oak woodland, riverine, marsh, and farm habitat, in order to preserve biodiversity and benefit declining, threatened, and endangered species of wildlife and plants. We believe that effective conservation integrates the preservation of natural lands as well as agricultural lands and practices.

Description

The Cosumnes River Preserve consists of over 50,000 acres of wildlife habitat and agricultural lands owned by seven land-owning Partners. The Partners include The Nature Conservancy, Bureau of Land Management, California Department of Fish & Wildlife, Sacramento County Regional Parks, Department of Water Resources, Ducks Unlimited, and the California State Lands Commission. The Preserve is centered along the Cosumnes River, its floodplains and riparian habitat. This habitat is buffered by a variety of agricultural operations. The Preserve provides numerous social, economic, and recreational benefits to local communities and to people residing in the larger Sacramento and San Joaquin areas. The habitat supports wildlife, including birds that migrate throughout the Pacific Flyway.
