Bring Books to Life for Children in Eagle Rock

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Los Angeles Public Library

  • 9 people are interested

STAR (Story Telling and Reading)volunteers share their love of reading with children for 2 hrs/wk for at least 6 months, making books come to life and early literacy exposure fun. STAR is a Los Angeles Public Library program that brings children and adults together from diverse cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds to share in the joy of reading.

A STAR Volunteer Reader is a volunteer who reads books and tells stories with children at their local library. They serve as positive role models for children. They are trained in a workshop on reading techniques that make books and stories come alive. A background check and fingerprinting is required and provided by the Library for all potential volunteer readers.

When children read books one-on-one with a STAR volunteer, they improve their reading skills, enrich their imagination and develop a life-long love of reading. Become a STAR reader and MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN A CHILD'S LIFE!

About Los Angeles Public Library

Location:

630 W. 5th Street, Los Angeles, CA 90071, US

Mission Statement

The Los Angeles Public Library provides free and easy access to information, ideas, books and technology that enrich, educate and empower every individual in our city's diverse communities.

Description

The Los Angeles Public Library is largest public research institution west of the Mississippi.

With more than 70 branch libraries and Central Library subject departments serving millions of Angelenos on a yearly basis, our programs are supported by thousands of volunteers in a variety of capacities. Whether providing one on one literacy tutoring, cutting out craft supplies for story time activities, helping serve summer lunch at the library, or serving as a Friend of the Library, all volunteers play a role in the work of LAPL.

If you would like to volunteer, but don't see a listing that matches your interests, please contact your local branch or the Volunteer Engagement Office. Opportunities and needs vary by location and fluctuate throughout the year.

Please note that the minimum age for volunteers is 14 (with the exception of 11-13-year-olds joining Teen Councils), minimum time commitments are required for most opportunities, adult volunteers working with children will be fingerprinted, and LAPL does not accept court-mandated community service.
