Training and education is the responsibility of the Director of Youth Development who coordinates with the Directors of Outreach and Apartment Support to ensure that training programs are designed to meet the needs of youth served by the program. In addition to the training provided through Apartment Support activities mentioned above, local programs can assist kids in the following areas:

o Obtaining a GED or High School Diploma and explaining the difference between the two;

o Helping kids track down their previous school records;

o Ensuring the kids can work at the junior/high school level prior to getting them involved with a school;

o Finding an appropriate school for each kid (e.g., public, street, alternative);

o Helping kids qualify and enter programs offered by the Private Industry Council;

o Helping kids qualify and enter technical schools;

o Helping kids qualify and enter the Job Corps.

The Director of Youth Development is also responsible for implementing a viable tutoring program, where appropriate, so that kids can get help with reading, writing, and math to ensure success or reentry into school. Further, the director will seek to identify specialized vocational and technical training for the kids. Doing so will help the kids realize they can do more than work for a fast food restaurant or in landscaping.
