Reading Coaches needed in Revere Public Schools

ORGANIZATION: Literations

  • 3 people are interested

Generations Incorporated is looking for adult volunteers to serve as literacy coaches at Elementary Schools in Revere. Nearly 50% of Revere third graders are not reading proficiently. Students not reading at grade level by fourth grade are 4 times more likely to drop out of school and are more likely to become involved with the criminal justice system. Be a part of our volunteer team to combat this literacy crisis!

Volunteers tutor small groups of students in a classroom (K-3rd grade) or work one-on-one with students. No previous experience teaching is required, just a desire to help children become better readers!

Volunteers commit to serving for the full school year for a minimum of 4 hours per week (over two days for 2 hours each day). (Some opportunities to receive a monthly stipend are available for individuals who volunteer 10 hours per week.)

We provide extensive pre-service training to give you the tools you need to help students. Our volunteers are supported by a Site Team Leader at their service location and attend monthly professional development meetings for ongoing support. You will work with the same group of students every week to develop a relationship with the students, serve as a mentor, and see meaningful improvement in their reading skills!

Opportunities are typically available mornings between the hours 8:30 am - 1:30 pm, Mondays - Thursdays.

Visit our website to learn about upcoming information sessions or call our main office to learn more!

Mission Statement

Literations drives educational equity through experienced community volunteers empowering young readers for lifelong learning.

Description

Literations is a nonprofit literacy organization dedicated to improving the reading proficiency of young students in 1st through 4th grade in under-resourced communities using a proven literacy model and trained volunteer coaches.

Nearly 70% of students who live in our communities are not reading at grade level when they enter the fourth grade. Literations is squarely positioned to address the urgent need for individualized support given the growing opportunity gaps for young students.

Our Unique Model

  • Our exclusive focus on students in 1st-4th grade results from the growing body of research that indicates this is the juncture that has the most impact on a child’s lifelong success.
  • Providing more time to practice reading skills with trained volunteer coaches using a structured curriculum provides students with the skills and confidence to succeed.
Thanks to our 1:1 coaching model, Literations students end the school year reading 1.5 grade levels higher than they began.
