Less than 35% of fourth graders in Boston Public Schools can read proficiently. Children who are not reading at grade level by fourth grade are four times more likely to drop out of school and more likely to become involved with the criminal justice system.

Be a part of our volunteer team to combat this literacy crisis!

Generations Incorporated is looking for older adult volunteers to serve one-on-one or in K - 3rd grade classrooms in Boston Public Elementary Schools and select Boys & Girls Clubs. (Minimum of 4 hours per week, served over two days, 2 hours each day) for the full school year. No previous teaching experience is required, just a desire to help children become better readers! (Some opportunities to receive a monthly stipend are available for individuals who volunteer 10 hours per week.)

We provide extensive pre-service training to give you the tools you need to help students. Our volunteers are supported by a Site Team Leader at their service location and attend monthly professional development meetings for ongoing support. You will work with the same group of students every week to develop a relationship with the students, serve as a mentor, and see meaningful improvement in their reading skills.

About Literations

Location:

One Federal Street, 5th Floor, Boston, MA 02110, US

Mission Statement

Literations drives educational equity through experienced community volunteers empowering young readers for lifelong learning.

Description

Literations is a nonprofit literacy organization dedicated to improving the reading proficiency of young students in 1st through 4th grade in under-resourced communities using a proven literacy model and trained volunteer coaches.

Nearly 70% of students who live in our communities are not reading at grade level when they enter the fourth grade. Literations is squarely positioned to address the urgent need for individualized support given the growing opportunity gaps for young students.

Our Unique Model

  • Our exclusive focus on students in 1st-4th grade results from the growing body of research that indicates this is the juncture that has the most impact on a child’s lifelong success.
  • Providing more time to practice reading skills with trained volunteer coaches using a structured curriculum provides students with the skills and confidence to succeed.
Thanks to our 1:1 coaching model, Literations students end the school year reading 1.5 grade levels higher than they began.
