The Ecology Center has been working to steward East River Park since 1998. For 20 years, we have brought this 57.5-acre park’s native ecology back to full bloom with the help of dedicated volunteers. The Ecology Center leads over 2000 volunteers annually to revitalize the riverfront park, which stretches 1.5 miles along the East River.

Groups range from 5 to 140 volunteers and work with our expert staff on open space preservation and maintenance, wildlife habitat creation, and urban gardening in the East River Park or LES Ecology Center Garden.

Teams of volunteers work in the park beautifying the planting beds, weeding, and planting perennials.

Mission Statement

The Lower East Side Ecology Center works toward a more sustainable New York City by providing community-based recycling and composting programs, developing local stewardship of green space, and increasing community awareness, involvement and youth development through environmental education programs.

Description

The Lower East Side Ecology Center, also known as Outstanding Renewal Enterprises, Inc., was founded in 1987. It was one of the first organizations to offer community-based recycling and composting programs in New York City, facilitated by providing innovative recycling drop-off centers. Today, the Ecology Center offers services and education for a range of environmental subjects: organics collection/composting, electronic waste recycling, and stewardship of public green spaces.

The organization focuses on providing opportunities for all New Yorkers to learn about the environmental issues that the city faces. Furthermore, it also provides resources and solutions for addressing these issues.
