About NAMI LORAIN COUNTY

Location:

Mission Statement

The mission of NAMI Lorain County is to improve the quality of life for consumers living with disabling brain disorders/mental illness through providing their families and friends with educational opportunities, support groups, and advocacy in the public arena.

Description

NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. We are an association of hundreds of local affiliates, state organizations and volunteers who work in your community to raise awareness and provide support and education that was not previously available to those in need. NAMI of Lorain County is a national affiliate and has been in existence since 1986. In Lorain County, highly trained volunteers participate to provide education and support, combat stigma, advocate for adequate health insurance, housing, rehabilitation, and jobs for people with mental illness and their families. In addition to providing education and support to family members and peer to peer support to those with mental illness we also operate the LOSS (Local Outreach to Suicide Survivors) program in Lorain County. Our trained volunteers and staff are on call 24/7 and respond to the scene of a suicide at the request of local Police Departments to offer support and information to family and friends after a suicide. Our service extends as long as the survivors feel they need help. In addition to these positions we are always looking for volunteers to help in our office and at fundraising and outreach events.
