Volunteering in the Gold Troughs!!

Do you love to tell the stories that make Colorado amazing? Do you have a passion for passing history on to the next generation?

The Western Museum of Mining and Industry is looking for an adult(18 or older) to volunteer to give guided tours on Saturdays. We offer two tours a day and also run our machines in between tours for guests on occasion. There are two shifts available. You can either choose one or both if you would like to serve for the day. Our shifts are from 9:00a to 1:00p or from 12:00p to 4:00p.

We also have positions available during the week for a regular schedule, or we have extra opportunities available when a school books an educational tour at the museum. These schedules vary.

We will provide all the training needed for the tour and the machines we run during the tour. We are looking for someone who is committed to sharing their passion and is able to serve two to four Saturdays per month.

Please contact Julie Schroeder, Volunteer Coordinator at volunteer@wmmi.org if you are interested in volunteering at the museum that works.

Mission Statement

Established in 1970, the Western Museum of Mining and Industry (WMMI) is a private nonprofit, 501(c) 3 whose mission is to preserve, collect and interpret the rich mining history and related industries of Colorado and the American West.

Description

Unique to WMMI is the actual operation of its carefully restored multi-ton steam engines and mining machines. The emphasis of the museum's collections is on the technology and technological history of mining and metallurgy, as well as the social history of the American West. Over 4,000 artifacts are on display at the 27-acre indoor/outdoor exhibit site, which includes a working hoist house; mine blacksmith shop; ten stamp mill; and multi-purpose center with exhibits, theater and a 13,000 volume research library. WMMI has been accredited by the American Association of Museums (one of only three Colorado Springs museums to hold this honor) since 1979, and is the only accredited mining museum in the western United States.
