ORGANIZATION: The Trustees of Reservations

Overview

The Trustees of Reservations is looking for an enthusiastic person to digitize photographs, memorabilia, and manuscript items. The volunteer will help the Archives & Research Center fulfill research requests, create content for exhibits, and share our collections with online audiences by scanning and photographing historic and contemporary materials. Using a flatbed scanner and overhead camera, this person will carefully digitize items and write brief descriptions of the new files in Microsoft Word. Prior experience with cameras or scanning is preferred but not required; the volunteer will receive in-person training and written instructions for all equipment .

Responsibilities 

  • Work on site at the Archives & Research Center
  • Follow the guidelines for safely handling photographs, memorabilia, and manuscripts as described by the archivist
  • Digitize selected collection items using the flatbed scanner or overhead camera
  • Create documentation in Microsoft Word that includes filenames and brief descriptions of scanned material
  • Log volunteer hours regularly

Qualifications 

  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to follow the ARC’s guidelines for safe handl ing of historic or fragile materials
  • Comfortable with renaming and moving computer files
  • Experience or interest in digitization and photography
  • Experience with Microsoft Word
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time
  • Ability to type and look at a computer screen 
  • Interest in Massachusetts history
  • Knowledge and experience of Adobe Photoshop a bonus, but not required

Time Commitment

Minimum of 2 hours per week for at least 2 months.  Position ends when project is completed.
