Volunteer needed that has React.js frontend or Python backend experience (remote/virtual position)

Kids In Danger (KID), a Chicago-based nonprofit, is looking for a skilled volunteer (remote/virtual) to assist in an IT program project to help save children's lives by alerting shoppers to recalled and dangerous products online before they purchase them, through a Google Chrome browser extension called Recall.it. The extension is in a beta phase and we need volunteers to join our team to help us take it to scale. We are based in Chicago but you can volunteer from anywhere in U.S.

Organization description:

KID is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting children by fighting for product safety. KID’s mission is to save lives by enhancing transparency and accountability through safer product development, better education and stronger advocacy for children. We fulfill our mission by reaching out to caregivers to spread safety awareness and recall information, serving as a watchdog on regulatory agencies and manufacturers, and working with designers and engineers to make safety a top priority.

Project description:

Below is a brief overview of the Recall.it browser extension. The beginning of this overview will describe the project’s structure/architecture. The second part will be mainly about skill requirements. This primarily requires React.js or Python experience.

The current extension can be found here: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/recallit-safety-assistant/chfbfjifchommaipbhffdjobgbkkibeb

There are three core pieces to the Recall.it extension. The data layer is a mix between open source API and mongodb database, the backend is a python/flask api, the frontend is a React.JS web application and it is connected to a Google extension that calls the React.JS web application in an iframe.

We have it today in a Google Chrome extension and are working on integrating it into Firefox and Safari. We need assistance to deploy this extension into those other browsers.

We need assistance to build a feedback feature to the application and add a web application (React and Node.JS to facilitate a mapping process).

The backend consists in a flask web application that is called by the front end. Python backend experience is needed.

About Kids In Danger

Mission Statement

Kids In Danger (KID) is a nonprofit dedicated to protecting children by improving children's product safety. KID was founded in 1998 when 16 month-old Danny Keysar was killed in a recalled portable crib in his licensed childcare facility. His parents founded KID so that no more children would be hurt or killed by dangerous, recalled products. Fifteen years after our founding, substantive improvements to children's product safety oversight are on the horizon. Be on the frontlines in working to strengthen the children's product safety system and in getting lifesaving safety information to the public!
