Rehabilitating wildlife can be an extremely rewarding experience! Most species require a prospective rehabber to obtain state (and sometimes federal) permits to be able to rehabilitate them in their home. Those interested in at-home wildlife rehabilitation can work as a sub-permitted rehabilitator under the mentorship of a permitted rehabilitator. Becoming a permitted wildlife rehabilitator generally takes from 1.5 to 2 years.

Wildlife rehabilitators with TWRC are uniquely supported in a number of ways:

  • Discounts on consumable rehab supplies
  • Assistance with caging needs and cage set-up/enrichment
  • Advance notice of educational opportunities
  • Personal mentorship by experienced rehabilitators specializing in the species in which you are interested.
  • Assistance with getting sub-permitted or obtaining your own rehabilitation permit for a home facility.
  • Free veterinarian assistance for animals in rehabilitation.
  • Free medication for rehab animals and access to x-ray equipment.

Mission Statement

Since 1979, TWRC Wildlife Center has been committed to providing quality emergency care and rehabilitation for injured, ill, and orphaned wildlife brought to us by the public. Through education and engaging the public in wildlife-care programs, TWRC continues to make a difference for urban wildlife threatened by loss of habitat.

Description

Compassion

At Texas Wildlife Rehabilitation Center (TWRC) we believe in the inherent worth and dignity of all living things. We value the lives of every animal that enters our care and vow to treat each animal humanely and with respect and compassion. Although our goal is to release all animals back to the wild, we hold ourselves accountable to do what is best for each individual animal.

Stewardship

Through our outreach programs we aim to help the public understand the importance of conservation and to gain an appreciation of native Texas wildlife. We are committed to educating the public about wildlife as a means to encourage people to coexist with the wild animals who share our environment.

Commitment

TWRC provides a community for people who are dedicated to Texas wildlife. We value and care about each other - working to inspire, challenge and support our fellow wildlife caregivers. Although many of us are volunteers, we aspire to a level of professionalism in everything we do.

Leadership

The staff and volunteers of TWRC strive to develop future leaders in the wildlife field. Through our work with the Boy and Girl scouts and local colleges, we actively seek out and then train tomorrow’s wildlife workers. By openly showing our enthusiasm for conserving native Texas wildlife, we establish bold visions and purposefulness in the next generation.
