Program Assistant

The San Jose Library Annex is looking for program assistants to help with our children's programs, including Open Play, Little Book Club (Story Hour) and STEAM Club (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math). Help plan fun activities and crafts for children and their families, or volunteer to read a story during our story time!

Primary Duties

Select books, prepare props for storytime; gather supplies for art activity. Provide imaginative and exciting storytelling to children and their families, engage children in the story and facilitate art activity. storyteller should be able perform 30 minute storytimes geared for toddlers, arts and crafts storytimes for young school age children, and 30 minute bedtime storytimes for all ages. This is an on call position as a substitute storyteller. Must be willing to drive to different branches and set up the room for storytelling. Tasks may also include light library clerk duties such as signing up children for the Summer or Fall Reading Programs and checking out books.

Qualifications

Enjoys children, reading aloud and performing; outgoing and animated mannerism. Ability to keep children engaged and organized in large groups. Must be able to work in a noisy environment and with large groups of children.

Training Provided

Children’s Library staff will offer orientation and training that will provide you with the skills and tools for program expectations.
