Volunteer Job Description

In this role, you will work with complex systems, designing, developing, and integrating them at every stage of its life cycle. If you’re reliable in delivering mission-critical infrastructure with an eye toward accessibility, optimization, and security, we’d like to hear from you.

Ideal volunteer will:
- Have expert knowledge of software development processes and solid experience testing and evaluating current networking systems.
- Find issues and fix them with beautiful, meticulous code
- Have a knack for using technology as a tool to empower others

Objectives of this Role

• Manage and monitor all infrastructure and system installations, including configurations, testing, and maintenance
• Implement and maintain backups, security, and redundancy strategies
• Identify potential issues and integrate possible solutions
• Craft custom scripts, reducing requirement of human interaction
• Enable faster and smarter business processes and implement analytics for meaningful
• Engage with upper management regularly with reports on project status, activities, and achievements
• Grow existing platform and network capabilities to handle massive growth, enabling the generation of insights and data products on all internal and external data via self-serve computing, reporting solutions, and interactive querying
• Visualize, design, and develop creative and innovative software platforms, as we continue to experience dramatic growth in the usage and visibility of our products
• Create scalable software platforms and applications, and efficient networking solutions that are unit tested, code reviewed, and checked regularly for continuous integration
• Examine existing systems, identifying flaws and creating solutions to improve service uptime and time-to-resolve through monitoring and automated remediation
• Plan and execute full software development life cycles (SDLC) for each assigned project, adhering to company standards and expectations

Daily and Monthly Responsibilities

• Communicate with stakeholders to identify what they want the application to accomplish
• Use expert-level administration and optimization of hosts and servers to ensure high availability and appropriate resource management
• Standardize and automate processes and monitoring using scripting technology
• Install and configure operating systems, software, and hardware components, and clearly document the design, maintenance, and support procedures for routine tasks to leverage IT support staff
• Routinely test software for bugs, redundancies, and security issues
• Conduct high-level root-cause analysis for service interruption and establish preventive measures
• Create reports and documentation outlining findings and solutions; oversee the overall backup strategy and daily operations for secure backups and restore testing
• Design and build tools and frameworks to automate development, testing deployment, management and monitoring of the company’s 24x7 services and products
• Plan and scale distributed software and applications, applying synchronous and asynchronous design patterns, write code, and deliver with urgency and quality
• Collaborate with global team, producing project work plans and analyzing the efficiency and feasibility of project operations, while leveraging global technology stack and making localized improvements
• Track, document, and maintain software and network system functionality-both internally and externally, leveraging opportunities to improve engineering productivity
• Give a high level of attention to creating software and networking platforms free of faulty programming, keeping developers in step continuously without compromising site reliability
• Work with product managers and user experience designers to influence the strategy for the next wave of product features and system capabilities, identifying the best way to deliver capabilities

Skills and Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related fields
• Experience with or knowledge of programming languages and operating systems; current equipment and technologies, enterprise backup and recovery procedures, system performance-monitoring tools, active directories, virtualization, HTTP traffic, content delivery, and caching
• Experience in project management, application design and integration, and cloud computing (specifically Microsoft Azure)
• Expertise in creating, analyzing, and repairing large-scale distributed systems
• Knowledge of Git or other version control
• 5+ years experience engineering software and networking platforms
• 7+ years experience (professional and academic) with Java, Python, and C++
• Proven ability to document design processes, including development, tests, analytics, and troubleshooting
• Experience with rapid development cycles in a web-based environment
• Strong scripting and test automation abilities

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of Unix system administration
• Professional certifications
• Working knowledge of relational databases as well as ORM and SQL technologies
• Proficiency with HTML5, CSS3, and content management systems
• Proven experience designing interactive applications and networking platforms
• Web application development experience with multiple frameworks, including Wicket, GWT, and Spring MVC
• Desire to continue to grow professional capabilities with ongoing training and educational opportunities
