We are seeking compassionate volunteers for our hospice companionship program from all walks of life. We need veterans who are willing to talk to other veterans, certified therapy pets and the humans who work with them, musicians who would like to share their music, or just kind people who are willing to listen to stories or hold the hand of someone who doesn't want to die alone.

Our next weekend-long group training event will be May 16th and 17th from 8:30am to 3:30pm. Lunch and snacks will be provided. This in-depth weekend training will include guest speakers from various hospice modalities and a chance to meet other volunteers to discuss the experience. If this time doesn't work for you or if you'd like to get started sooner, send me an email or give me a call and we can schedule a 1 to 1 training here at the office at a time that works for you. For more information on this and other training opportunities or to set up an interview please contact us via email or phone. Give us a call so we can get you enrolled!

After training, volunteers are considered unpaid staff members, so they can have access to protected health information regarding the patients they are assigned to. We care for our patients in their own homes, wherever that happens to be. We serve a 60 mile radius around Eugene: many of our patients are elderly and live in assisted living or skilled nursing facilities (though some live in private homes) and I do my best to find a good match for each volunteer in regards to their location and preferences. We ask that volunteers commit to a minimum of one hour per week with their patient, though we have some volunteers who choose to do more or to take on more than one patient if they have time. Each patient is unique in their needs and it depends a lot on what the diagnosis is and at what point in the disease process a physician has referred them to us. Some patients are with us for a few days, others for a year or more. Some enjoy being read to or having someone to play board games or work on craft projects and bucket list items with, some are in need of spiritual exploration and deep conversation, while others are unable to converse and just need a presence to hold space with them and reassure them that it will be okay. It is work that can take an emotional toll, but also can be extremely rewarding and life-affirming.

Mission Statement

Hospice is about quality of life. Your compassion and loving presence is all that is required to make a tremendous difference in someone's life. Signature Hospice invites you to join our team to support patients and families in the Eugene/Springfield community and surrounding areas. Our volunteer training will prepare you to provide the companionship and support so many patients and families need when faced with a terminal illness. As a volunteer, you may take walks with a person in the garden at a facility or their home, listen to stories about their life, adventures, and relationships or about current worries and concerns. Our volunteer opportunities include direct patient/family companionship and support--writing letters, reading books aloud, playing board and card games, playing and listening to music, providing conversations and companionship, sitting quietly, watching TV or enjoying nature, and sometimes helping with bucket list items.

Description
