Please visit the new page to apply.
Who Are We:
Maverick Landing Community Services is a family-based nonprofit organization in East Boston that helps children, youth, and adults works to advance educational and economic goals by building 21st-century skills. We are based in the heart of a mixed-income housing development where nearly 1400 people live.
Our kids and teens programming includes a 1,000 square foot makerspace for kids ages 7 to 12 and a teen makerspace and production lab where teens are taught to design, innovate, and develop educational tools and toys that help children to develop visual spatial literacy--an important foundation for engaging interest and success in STEAM (Science, Tech, Engineering, Art/Design, and Math) fields.
Our adult programming includes English classes provided with support from English for New Bostonians and job readiness and placement provided in partnership with Boston Career Connections (BCC).
What We Are Looking For:
Maverick Landing Community Services is seeking a skill-based volunteer who is experienced in 3D laser cutting/printing and particularly interested in developing laser cut games, puzzles, and toys that support visual spatial literacy, pattern recognition, and visual math. This volunteer position will be working closely with Maverick Landing staff + youth. The right candidate should be proficient in Glowforge and can work their way around most 3D laser models. Candidates should also love giving back to the community, working with people, and believe in supporting the greater community through voluntary efforts. This is a great opportunity for an individual to get involved with a small and growing non-profit, in an up and coming Boston neighborhood.
Commitment: This would be a small-scale volunteer project, with a commitment of 2 hours a week - with opportunity to volunteer more if interested!
Compensation: This is not a paid volunteer opportunity. Compensation will be in the form of granted access to our space/laser cutter during off hours.
If interested, please contact: william@mavericklanding.org

Description
MLCS is in the heart of a housing development where families live in subsidized units for over a decade on average. We watch babies become toddlers; toddlers become children; children become teens; and teens become adults. We have the opportunity to reach people at every turn. MLCS leverages this access by providing age-appropriate programming to help people break through learned barriers to build 21st century skills.
We Support:
- School-aged children under 12: MLCS encourages smarter media and digital consumption in a staffed makerspace and tech lab. Through Maverick Makers, staff help children to develop a curiosity for learning with STEAM-based activities in a maker space for young learners.
- Teens: MLCS employs a positive youth development and mentoring approach to build life skills and reengage youth in the possibilities of their future. Maverick Maker teens work and lead in the makerspace with kids and also work on product and program design and they are actively learning and using the design process with support from in-house designers and makers.
- Adulthood: Supporting 21st century workforce development through a partnership with New Bostonians that makes possible English Innovations, a technology-infused English as a Second Language program as well as a partnership with Boston Career Connections a 21st century workforce development program.
