Thank you for your interest in joining Care for Real's volunteer team!
Care for Real is a food pantry located in the Edgewater and Rogers Park neighborhoods of Chicago. We are currently experiencing a large increase in need in our community. We provided 73% more grocery visits in 2021 than in 2020. We could not have done this without our amazing volunteer team.
We have opportunities available for volunteers wishing to serve occasionally, monthly, weekly or more! Volunteer shifts are available Monday through Saturday from 8:30-4pm and on two evenings a week. Some of our current volunteer needs are:
- Food distribution: help provide groceries to our neighbors in need during food distributions.
- Food packing: help pack bags of groceries
- Clothing closet: organizing our clothing closet and sorting donations
- Pet Pantry: distributing pet food at our monthly pet pantry
- Reception desk: staff our reception desk and welcome visitors
- Warehouse support: stock shelves, unload deliveries and other jobs
To get started volunteering with us for the first time, please fill out an application here: careforreal.org/volunteer and we will schedule a virtual orientation session with you once we receive you application. If you have any questions, please email us at volunteer@careforreal.org.
Thanks!

About Care for Real

Mission Statement
Care for Real provides food for neighbors to prepare more than 1.62 million meals each year and, in addition, offers a free clothes closet, a pet food pantry and support services.
Description
We are celebrating 50 Years of Caring in 2021.
Care for Real was established in 1971 by Rev. William Johnson of the Episcopal Church of the Atonement, Rabbi Herman Schaalman of Emanuel Congregation and other members of the Edgewater Clerical Rabbinical Association. This organization, which is now known as the Edgewater Community Religious Association (ECRA), wanted to provide emergency help to victims of fires in "Arson Alley," the Kenmore-Winthrop corridor between Foster and Devon. It was intended to be a short-term solution to a specific problem. However, it soon became clear that there was a need in Edgewater for an ongoing safety net for neighbors in need. Today Care for Real is the safety net for the entire Edgewater community.
