Volunteer with Behind the Book, a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to love reading. Through our rich, innovative programs, which are part of the class curricula, accomplished authors visit high-needs Pre-K-12th-grade classrooms to guide students in creating their own writing projects based on the theme of the author's book.
No experience is necessary. We provide advance information on your role, and hold a brief orientation right before a workshop begins. As a coach, you'll support and encourage students as they edit their writing, do research, or create artwork.
These workshops need your help at a school in the South Bronx, NYC. To sign up, contact volunteer@behindthebook.org with program code FDA9PG-S and the time slot(s) you choose. We'll supply more information when you're confirmed.
Date: Thursday, November 21st
Time (choose one or more slots): 8:30 - 9:15 AM; 10:00 - 10:50 AM; and/or 12:25 - 1:15 PM
About the workshop: Ninth-graders will consider choices and their consequences in Paul Griffin’s Ten Mile River, a novel about the intense friendship of two homeless youths. Students will discuss with the author how storytelling is critical to clarifying and achieving your goals, then write about something unforgettable that happened to them. Coaches will help them edit their drafts to capture important details.
To receive announcements of new programs as they're scheduled, please complete our brief questionnaire. at http://www.behindthebook.org/join-us/volunteer/.
