ORGANIZATION: Family Help Center

  • 5 people are interested

The goal of the Family Help Center is to stop the intergenerational cycle of violence by offering services to families when parenting gets tough. In order to help more parents, we are excited about our new program called Community Parent-Child Bonding! This program will sponsor three weekly support groups for parents, as these groups have proven very successful way in strengthening families. In order to encourage parents to seize this opportunity, their children are looked after while the parents are meeting in another room.

We are looking for 1 volunteer to work with these children on Wednesday afternoons from 1 PM - 3 PM, 1 volunteer to work with these children on Thursday evenings from 7 - 8:30 PM, and 1 volunteer to work with another group of children on Friday afternoons from 1 PM - 3 PM. Each group will be located at the Salvation Army at 960 Main St., Buffalo 14202.

The children will range from 6 weeks through 8 years old, and toys/activities will be provided. Volunteers will be on their own with the children, so a background check will be required. Volunteers should be over age 18 and have previous experience with infants and toddlers.

Please help these families help themselves by enabling them to attend these important meetings!

Mission Statement

The mission of the Family Help Center is to provide free support to families and safety to children when parenting gets tough, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Description

For over 40 years, the Family Help Center has provided services to families with children of all ages - the support they can't always get from families, neighbors, or even parents. Agency services include: 24-hour Parent Help Line and in-home crisis intervention, phone follow-up services, parent instructional groups with companion child care groups, child enrichment programs, intensive home based preventive services, mandated preventive services, child care and emergency respite care, advocacy and linkage, and community education. No fees are charged for these services. The Agency also has a full service day care center, the Family Help Center Daycare Center, licensed for 124 children.

Through our services, we work to stop the intergenerational cycle of violence, as statistics show that approximately 95% of parents who abuse/neglect their children were maltreated as children. As a nonprofit agency, we are dedicated to the prevention of child abuse and neglect in all its forms - physical, emotional, and sexual. We offer immediate assistance - with no application procedures, no eligibility requirements, and no waiting period. Perceived by families as being safe and non-threatening, the Agency is highly effective in engaging families resistant to traditional services.
