Everyone Can Write!

The SLCC Community Writing Center (CWC) collaborates with a variety of libraries and community centers to offer workshops, coaching, and other writing support. The CWC will be facilitating a number of workshops as part of our upcoming spring programming, and will have many opportunities for volunteers to participate as facilitators in workshops across a wide variety of topics: from resumes and practical writing to poetry and other creative writing, and even hand-lettering and Valentine's Day themed workshops. Volunteer facilitators for these programs provide collaborative writing assistance and feedback to writers. Specific opportunities vary based on the needs of our writing partners and may be short term or ongoing. Workshops will typically be a single 90 minute to 2 hour session.

Volunteers interested in working with partnership programs will receive training and support from the Offsite Program Coordinator.

Workshops are:

  • Open and accessible to any interested writer.
  • Held at various locations throughout the Salt Lake valley.
  • Often a writer’s first impression of the CWC.
  • Provided to help writers attain knowledge that will allow them to explore their own writing process.

Volunteer Workshop Facilitators are:

Dependable:
The CWC depends on having reliable facilitators who will commit to a workshop time and place, and then follow through with that commitment. If a facilitator is unable to attend their workshop, they must alert the Off-site Program Coordinator with as much advance notice as possible.

Friendly:
A facilitator must be able to create a welcoming environment in which people can learn and grow. This may include engaging in small talk before or after a workshop, a willingness to share short portions their own work related to the workshop, or communicating with a wide variety of attendees.

Prepared:
With a variety of people attending workshops, different situations, from unexpected questions to excessive tangents, naturally arise. Facilitators need to be prepared for questions, even if the answer is "I’m not sure. Let’s look that up." They must also be able to guide a workshop back to the planned curriculum if attendees are distracted.

Orientation and training for this position will be provided by the Community Writing Center. All volunteers with the Community Writing Center must first attend a volunteer orientation. Orientations are held on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month at 6 pm at our location at 210 E. 400 S. Ste. 8 on the plaza at Library Square in Salt Lake City.

Thank you for your interest in strengthening our community of writers with your time and talents!

About SLCC Community Writing Center

Location:

210 East 400 South, Ste. 8, Salt Lake City, UT 84111, US

Mission Statement

The SLCC Community Writing Center (CWC) supports, motivates and educates people of all abilities and educational backgrounds who want to use writing for practical needs, civic engagement and personal expression. The CWC is based on the principles of Education, Community, and Collaboration. The CWC has historically challenged and should continue to challenge the assumptions... that some types of writing are more valuable than others that publication validates a piece of writing that higher education is somehow separate from community education; and that higher educational institutions can know what a community needs or wants without entering into full and mutually-beneficial partnership with that community.

Description

The CWC was founded on the premise that everyone can write with assistance and support from others. Based on the model of student writing centers that most college and universities have on campus to serve student writing needs, the CWC serves the entire Salt Lake metropolitian area community.

Because of a strong commitment to the community, Salt Lake Community College funds the CWC. SLCC values the variety of learning opportunities the CWC provides and is dedicated to providing on-going support for its programs.

These programs include Writing Coaching, Writing Workshops, and the DiverseCity Writing Series. The CWC also partners with local community organizations and governmental agencies to empower their clients, staff and volunteers through writing.

The CWC opened to the public in October 2001 in the Artspace Bridge Projects multi-use complext just across the street from the Salt Lake City homeless services district. In November 2005, the CWC moved to its current location in the Plaza of the SLC Main Library.
