Legal Consultant Working with Immigrants and Refugees
ORGANIZATION: SOUTHWEST DETROIT IMMIGRANT AND REFUGEE CENTER
Please visit the new page to apply.
Legal consultants help our legal clinic clients work through their legal issues. Legal consultants who are not licensed attorneys will begin a consultation with clients, gather information to define their problem, and then consult with our supervising attorney on a course of action. Consultants work as the anchor of a team of three: legal consultant, researcher, and translator.
Experience or education with legal or immigration systems is necessary. We divide the day into two shifts; 10:00-2:00 and 2:00-6:00. All legal consultants spend their first day at the clinic working with our staff attorney. After you’ve gotten a taste for the clinic setting, are approved by our staff attorney, and filled out a volunteer application, we can get you on the schedule to return for a future date.
Our clinics operate 10-6 pm Tuesday (Pontiac), Monday, Wednesday (Southwest Detroit), and Thursday, Friday (Eastside Detroit). All Legal Consultants must spend their first time at the clinic at Southwest on Wednesday.

Mission Statement
The Southwest Detroit Immigrant and Refugee Center provides free and low-cost legal services to underserved communities in the Detroit area, with a focus on recent immigrants and refugees.
Description
Despite their growing presence in Detroit, immigrants and refugees here have difficulty obtaining affordable legal services, housing, and assistance in establishing businesses. The Southwest Detroit Immigrant and Refugee Center helps meets these needs . . . one family at a time.
We have three core mission priorities:
1. Provide low cost legal services to immigrants and refugees seeking to make a home in the city of Detroit;
2. Offer low-cost housing to immigrants and refugees who have difficulty finding long-term residences in the city of Detroit; and
3. Assist businesses owned by Detroit residents (from disadvantaged communities) unable to find capital due to their inexperience, need for professional support, and/or immigration status.
