The Lost Towns Project, Inc., in cooperation with the Anne Arundel County Cultural Resources Division, has numerous volunteer opportunities year-round and welcomes newcomers of all levels of experience! Whether you want to assist in the field or in the lab, we have plenty of different experiences offered throughout the week.

Gain hands-on experience washing, processing, and identifying artifacts at the Anne Arundel Archaeology Lab No previous experience is necessary! Lab volunteers are welcome any time the lab is open, generally Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9:00-3:00.

Get your hands dirty by participating in an archaeological excavation! Field projects vary based on time of year and range from sites that are 13,000 years old all the way to the 1900s. Our field projects have currently slowed down for the season, and should start up again in the spring.

Mission Statement

The Lost Towns Project was formed to promote, facilitate and enable preservation, discovery, academic study, appreciation, and stewardship of public and privately-owned cultural resources, historic structures, and archaeological sites in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, and the Mid-Atlantic region by supporting the technical, scholarly, and intellectual work of academics, professionals, and students, facilitating public outreach efforts, and internship and volunteer opportunities.

The Lost Towns Project works with partners across Anne Arundel County and beyond to conduct archaeological and historical research into the area's past. We have opportunities for volunteers to participate in the archaeological process in the field or laboratory, as well as numerous public events throughout the year.
