The Mount St. Helens Institute, founded in 1996, connects people of all ages to Mount St. Helens and our natural world through educational programming designed to enrich visitors’ appreciation and understanding of the Pacific Northwest’s youngest and most active volcano.

We are proud of the many ways we connect people to the volcano they love, from outdoor youth education programs hosted at the Mount St. Helens Science & Learning Center, to expert-led field seminars and guided exploration programs, to meaningful volunteer opportunities across Mount St. Helens and the surrounding Gifford Pinchot National Forest.

The Mount St. Helens Institute is a 501(c) (3) private, nonprofit organization devoted to helping people understand and protect the volcano.

We consider ourselves to be purveyors of passion and our passion is Mount St. Helens

OUR MISSION: To advance understanding and stewardship of the Earth through science, education, and exploration of volcanic landscapes.

Each year thousands of students participate in education programs offered by the Mount St. Helens Institute. MSHI programs reach students in their classroom and bring them to the mountain for day or overnight programs. Education Volunteers help support our school programs staff by assisting and leading guided educational hikes, teaching in-class activities, supporting our overnight programs, and more. If you enjoy working with children, primarily in grades 4th - 12th, and have a passion for teaching and sharing the wonders of the natural world with others, we’d love to have you join us as an Education Volunteer.

Shifts vary, but generally occur on weekdays between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. June - September.

Minimum age is 18.
