Physical Activity Instruction (Move to Health Program)

Arlington Free Clinic (AFC) is a nonprofit organization that provides free, high-quality healthcare to low-income, uninsured adults in Arlington. AFC’s Move to Health Program (MTH) targets patients who are identified as being at risk for, and those who are already managing, a chronic disease, as well as patients who are deconditioned. The primary focus is to increase physical activity and promote good nutrition through patient-centered coaching delivered by volunteers.

Volunteer Move To Health coaches work with a team of volunteer coaches and interpreters to provide activity assessments and goal setting. Presently, Move to Health classes happen on Tuesday nights from 6-7:30pm.

The MTH coach: (1) encourages patients with or at risk for chronic health issues (Diabetes, Hypertension, Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome) to follow evidence-based guidelines to increase their activity level by: assessing current level of activity and fitness, establishing goals and providing ongoing support, (2) adapts the exercises for deconditioned patients with graded exercise for strength and endurance, and (3) helps patients set goals for changing eating habits and shifting to healthier choices as well as making exercise part of their daily routine.

The primary qualifications for the role of Move To Health coach are:

  • A strong belief in the importance of promoting physical activity and good nutrition to prevent/manage chronic disease (diabetes, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, etc.)
  • Availability to attend a MTH volunteer training session to learn the format as well as the assessment tools used in the weekly exercise/nutrition sessions.
  • Experience in exercise training, fitness, wellness preferred, but not required

Other helpful experience:

  • Fluency in languages other than English, mainly Spanish

The time commitment for volunteer MTH coaches is as follows:

  • Available Tuesday evenings from 5:30-7:30
  • Commits to volunteering at least 2 times a month

Mission Statement

Arlington Free Clinic advances health equity by providing comprehensive, whole-person healthcare to our neighbors who would otherwise lack access.

Description

At Arlington Free Clinic (AFC), we care for the whole person. Volunteer providers treat patients for every condition from chronic diabetes to cancer, while mental health counselors help them cope with the stresses of serious illness and poverty. New wellness programs and increased focus on preventive care help our patients live healthier lives. And, for the first time since the Clinic opened, visits to the dentist allow our patients to go out into the world with a confident smile.

Since 1994, Arlington Free Clinic has been committed to providing exemplary health care for Arlingtonians in need, serving about 1,600 patients each year. Access to health care makes such a critical difference in the lives of individuals and families - giving them peace of mind and economic security - and we continue to work every day toward a healthier Arlington.
