Rose Haven functions with a small staff that values and relies on volunteers on a daily basis. Our volunteers gain the the privilege of serving, and being enriched by the incredible women and children who come to enjoy the community we create together. In 2018 we had over 600 volunteers!

Although Rose Haven hospitality is devoted to women and children, we have many opportunities for men to volunteer. Guests can choose if they want to sign up for activities where they interact with male volunteer on-site (such as computer lab), and there are also opportunities to help our women off-site (such as drives and special events). There are many ways to get involved at Rose Haven, detailed below.

Hospitality: The following job descriptions are carried out in hospitality, and limited to female identified volunteers.

Kitchen: Work with staff to prepare nutritious meals in our renovated warming kitchen.

Meal Service: Serve delicious, hot meals prepared in our kitchen to those who need it most. This is a great role for those who like to socialize and be engaged with our guests.

Triage Assistant: Work at the front desk as support to our Intake and Triage Coordinator. This includes socializing and assisting with guests needs as well as finding and retrieving requested items.

Activities and Classes: Rose Haven has many activities that can be fun to facilitate; such as art, Writing, books clubs and more. Bring your unique skill set and create an activity for our ladies.

Medical Consulting: Nurses, doctors, nurse practitioners and other experienced health care people needed to staff our medical consulting office during hospitality hours.

Organizational Help: These duties are open to anyone of any gender.

Computer Lab: Share your skills by facilitating tutoring, resume building, job searches, budgeting and more.

Sorting: Help sort, stock and organize the donations we receive daily for our shop.

Pick-ups and Delivery: Rose Haven is able to provide resources to those in need because of generous donations from our community partners. We need volunteers to deliver food, diapers, clothing and more from all over the metro area on various days.

Events: Special events are a great way to raise funds and create awareness for Rose Haven. Please let us know if you’d like to volunteer at one of our annual events, or host a party or a community awareness activity of your own.

Organize a Drive for in-Kind Donations: Volunteers are needed to reach out to organizations, schools and the community for donated items such as hygiene, coats, undergarments and other items our women and children need on a regular basis.

Ongoing Committees: Serve on one of our committees-development/outreach or board of directors.

To learn more about these exciting opportunities or schedule your orientation please contact our Volunteer & Operations Manager, Jessica Almroth, at jalmroth@rosehaven.org. New volunteer orientations are held once every two weeks.

About Rose Haven

Location:

1740 NW Glisan St., Portland, OR 97209, US

Mission Statement

Our Vision: A community where everyone has safety, stability, love, health and home. Our Mission: To provide day shelter, resources, emotional support and community connections to women, children and marginalized genders experiencing homelessness and poverty.

Description

Safety, Resources and Community:
Rose Haven is a day shelter and community center in Portland OR serving women, children and marginalized genders experiencing poverty, trauma and intersecting issues. Service hours are Monday - Friday from 9:00-12:00 and Tuesday - Thursday from 1:00-4:00; volunteer opportunities are generally available from 8:30-4:00.

Rose Haven is a low-barrier agency that exists not to just meet basic needs, but to nurture souls and improve the emotional, mental and physical well-being of our guests and our community as a whole. We understand our agency exists within larger systems of oppression, and we seek to disrupt those structures through radical hospitality, advocacy on an individual and community level, and meaningful connections to resources. Recognizing the isolation and loneliness that homelessness can create, we work to hold a space where all guests can connect, have voice and be empowered.
