After 17 years in existence, OneWorld Now! is seeking to expand its governing board by adding at least two new members to our eight-member board. We seek dedicated high-level volunteers who are looking for board service opportunities and passionate about the OneWorld Now! mission of creating global citizens by providing scholarship-based access to foreign language training (Arabic, Russian, Korean, or Chinese), providing leadership training courses, and connecting students with study-abroad opportunities.

The OneWorld Now! governing board meets once per month to review and guide the work of OneWorld Now!, including reviewing a director's update on organizational programming and the organizational budget. Board members participate once or twice per year in spreading the word about major OneWorld Now! events, and may also elect to serve on sub-committees that make use of their skills or become involved as a volunteer in other aspects of programming that relate to their skills.

OneWorld Now! welcomes inquires from any potential board members who are passionate about furthering our mission; the organization can particularly benefit from expertise in communications to enhance our outreach and branding efforts, and from legal expertise to advise on aspects of our study abroad programming.

Mission Statement

To develop and support the next generation of global leaders.

Description

OneWorld Now! (OWN) was founded in 2002 in response to the tragic events of 9/11 and the increasing need to cultivate globally-minded citizens who have the skills and experiences to build a more peaceful and just world. Our mission is to develop the next generation of global leaders, with a commitment to advancing racial and economic equity among youth. Today, we believe our mission is more important than ever in the context of increasing national and global polarization.

OWN takes pride in its innovative educational model, which consists of three pillars: language, leadership, and study abroad. During our yearlong Global Leadership Program (GLP), OWN students enroll in twice-weekly after-school classes in one of our four critical languages (Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, Korean, and Russian) and participate in leadership workshops twice per month. At the end of the year, students organize and lead our annual Get Global leadership conference, where they develop skills like teamwork, time-management, and public speaking on local and global issues. During the summer break, students have access to scholarship-based study abroad opportunities in OWN-organized study abroad programs or in programs with partner institutions.
