Love the outdoors? Enjoy meeting new people and sharing your love of history? Become a part of history!

Learn to become a volunteer conductor and lead groups along a simulated Underground Railroad experience hike through fields, woods and across streams to the historic Sandy Spring. Learn various techniques that people escaping slavery would have used to elude pursuers, find water and food, and find their way. Learn about the history of the Underground Railroad both locally and in the U.S. and fascinating true stories of perils, escapes and captures.

FREE training available. SSL hours are also available for students who complete training and are able to provide a minimum number of hikes throughout the year.

[Pre-registration for training is required. Walk-ins will not be accepted.]

Leading these hikes is over trails in the woods, must be reasonably fit and able to project your voice while leading hike.

Description

Our agency is located just north of Washington D.C., and was originally created to protect the stream valleys around the D.C. area. We have grown into a 34,000 acre park system with over 400 local, urban and regional parks; recreation centers; ballfields; playgrounds; nature centers, a botanic garden and over 200 miles of trails.
