SWAG is the after-school program at Garden Court Community, an affordable housing community in Denver. We work with youth in grades 1st through 12th primarily on homework assistance. On Monday through Thursday we are dedicated to helping students understand and complete homework assignments. If a student has completed their homework or has no homework, other approved activities are available to them. On Fridays, the SWAG leader with the help of volunteers and interns, leads youth through group projects and activities.
On any given day at SWAG you might be the only volunteer working with the site leader. It is for this reason that we expect you to act as a "float" helper. This means that instead of sitting with one youth for the entire program, you are moving around the room, helping where it seems needed, and interacting with multiple students throughout the session.
Furthermore, we expect you to carry yourself in a professional manner. There is no designated dress code, but please dress appropriately. Although some of the students you are working with could be close in age, you are still expected to interact with all students the same. The students you meet at SWAG will look up to you and follow your lead. They will want to learn about who you are. I encourage you to ask our students questions and learn about them as well. SWAG is primarily a homework help program, but we also focus on social and emotional learning. Building relationships with peers, volunteers, interns and staff is part of that learning. When you come to volunteer at SWAG, please bring your best attitude and be ready to engage with youth.
Our after-school program cannot be successful without the help of our volunteers, thank you!
