Special Olympics Minnesota is seeking a Clinical Director to join the Healthy Athletes Opening Eyes program. Special Olympics MN needs qualified medical professionals to assist with the organization of the Opening Eyes screening events. Certificate and current licensure as an eye care professional such as Optometrist or Ophthalmologist are needed.
Special Olympics Opening Eyes is a 12-step vision evaluation. These evaluations have found that a large percentage of Special Olympics athletes in the U.S. have untreated eye problems. During Opening Eyes events volunteers conduct vision exams and refractions to evaluate problems, offer solutions or referrals for care and dispense appropriate eyewear to athletes.
Responsibilities:
- Work with Special Olympics MN to coordinate Opening Eyes screening events
- Recruit and train volunteer health professionals
- Use Healthy Athletes Software (HAS) to document athletes’ health status and needs during screenings
If you are a medical professional and are interested in this role, please respond with your contact information so we can share more information regarding this essential volunteer opportunity or contact us directly at kelsey.sparks@somn.org

Special Olympics Minnesota offers children and adults with intellectual disabilities year-round sports training and competition. Through Special Olympics’ athletic, health and leadership programs, people with intellectual disabilities transform themselves, their communities and the world.
Description
Special Olympics is a global movement of people creating a new world of inclusion and community. We aim to build a culture that accepts and welcomes every single person regardless of ability or disability. We are helping to make the world a better, healthier and more joyful place-one athlete, one volunteer, one family member at a time.
Special Olympics Minnesota (SOMN) trainings and competitions happen all year in locations across the state. We offer 16 Olympic-style sports. As a result, SOMN has something for you, whatever your age or skill level.
Through sports, our athletes celebrate their abilities, not their disabilities. Their world opens with acceptance and understanding, while becoming confident and empowered by their accomplishments. They make new friends, joining the most inclusive community on the planet-a global community that’s growing every day.
