GENERAL ROLE DESCRIPTION
The clinic nurse performs nursing tasks ordinary for an outpatient setting within scope of practice, and strives to provide a comfortable and dignified atmosphere and high standard of care for all patients.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
RN-specific
Conduct initial basic triage patient interviews; ensure necessary patient paperwork is completed, and document chief complaints. Notify Clinic Coordinator of apparent medical emergency, consulting with Provider on duty as needed, and follow ensuing direction.
All nurses
Carry out point of care testing, injections, patient teaching, blood draws or other tasks as directed by provider
Accurately document patient teaching and procedures performed using appropriate forms
Observe infection control standards and assist other volunteers in understanding and compliance
Maintain best practices for patient privacy standards (HIPAA) and assist in educating Clinical Support Volunteers about guidelines as deemed necessary
Seek assistance of Volunteer Medical Interpreters for all patients with limited English skills, consulting Clinic Coordinator if no certified interpreter for necessary language is on site
With Clinic Coordinator, Provider and Clinical Support Volunteers, identify patients who may be in need of additional services (such as but not limited to a medical home, specialist services, housing or food assistance, insurance access)
Assist in maintaining patient care areas clean and organized
Notify Clinic Coordinator of low levels of supplies in need of restocking, and of expired/soon-to-expire supplies
Perform only tasks which fall into the scope of practice of nurse’s licensure and training
SUPERVISION
The Volunteer Clinic Nurse reports to the Clinic Coordinator and Volunteer Coordinator in matters of scheduling, station assignment and non patient care tasks
The Volunteer Clinic Nurse receives direction from the Provider on duty in matters of direct patient care
TIME COMMITMENT
Nurses are asked to commit to a minimum of one shift per month. A shift is 5pm-9pm.
REQUIREMENTS
Current RN or LPN license issued by the State of Washington
Malpractice insurance (available at no charge through AHEC; information provided by Volunteer Coordinator)
Satisfactory Washington State Patrol background check (performed by Neighborhood Clinic prior to first shift)
Attend group orientation prior to first shift, or one-on-one orientation if authorized by Clinic Coordinator
Shadow existing volunteer nurse for one shift prior to carrying out responsibilities independently
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in family practice, urgent care or emergency room settings
Bilingual - any languages

The intent of this role description is to provide a representative summary of duties and responsibilities that will be expected from a volunteer in this position. Volunteers may be requested to assist with other duties related to clinic operations in accordance with volunteer’s scope of practice and skills.

A free, walk-in medical clinic in Tacoma: The Neighborhood Clinic is grounded on the belief that healing occurs where physical and medical care is accompanied by consistent emotional support and a regard for the whole person. Therefore, in response to the call of the Spirit, we at the Neighborhood Clinic endeavor to meet each person as an individual, to heal, to bind up wounds, to teach and to advocate for those in need. We strive to foster an emotionally supportive atmosphere, focusing on holistic care for all of those we welcome through our door.
Established in 1983, Neighborhood Clinic provides free urgent medical care to those who cannot afford or access healthcare. The clinic is open on Monday and Thursday evenings, seeing patients on a walk-in basis. All medical providers and other care team members are volunteers. Neighborhood Clinic is a United Way agency, and is supported completely by grants and private donations.
