During these uncertain times, how can we help?
See below to access our COVID-19 Resource Hub, and to explore our growing directory of COVID-19-specific and virtual volunteering opportunities.
At Lantern, we provide permanent housing and social services for people who have been homeless for a long time, come from disadvantaged communities, and deal with issues such as mental illnesses, physical disabilities or HIV. We also provide housing for young people who have aged out of foster care. We have 16 supportive housing buildings located in Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx, and serve a total population of about 1,500 people. We also operate and support two emergency shelters: one in Queens and the other in Washington Heights.
Currently we are looking for beauticians or beauty students who can provide hair, makeup, and nail care advice to our residents. This could include tips and tricks on manicures, makeup, haircuts, makeovers, or any other treatments a volunteer could offer.
Many of our clients don't have the opportunity to enjoy services like these regularly, so it would be great to provide them with your help!
We would ideally schedule a volunteer to come in once or twice a month to our sites or schedule a virtual workshop session via Zoom. We can also work with anyone's schedule as long as the event is on a weekday!

Lantern Community Services champions the independence and well-being of New Yorkers who have been impacted by or threatened with homelessness, as well as those who have aged out of foster care.
Lantern is home to more than 1,400 formerly homeless people who live in our 15 apartment buildings across New York City. We pioneered services for people living with HIV, and we are one of the largest providers for young adults who have aged out of foster care. We give people more than just basic support and a place to live, prioritizing interventions with scientifically proven results. We’ve grown our programs a lot recently, working creatively with our existing resources, but now we need volunteer power to bring more programs to more of our clients!
We'll work with your schedule.
